Getting married is all about “forever.

You’re committing to spending the rest of your life together, and your ring should symbolize that. When you create a custom engagement ring, you can ensure that you’ll still love it ten, 20, and even 50 years down the road. It may require a little extra work, but the end result is worth the effort!

Are you ready to get started? This guide covers everything you need to know to create a custom engagement ring design.

How to Create a Custom Engagement Ring Design

We’ll walk you through the process from beginning to end so you know exactly what to expect when you build your ring.

1. Choose the Right Company

It’s no secret that engagement rings are expensive, so it’s imperative to work with a designer who will get it right the first time.

First, narrow down your search to a designer in your city (or within driving distance) that you’re comfortable visiting three to four times throughout the process.

Second, read reviews. A lot of them. A good designer will listen to your love story and take the time to get to know you and your partner. If you feel rushed or uncomfortable, your ring just won’t turn out right. So, do your research, read reviews, and choose a custom jewelry designer you trust to ensure you have only the best possible experience.

2. Set an Appointment

Your first appointment to create a custom engagement ring design can go one of three ways.

Although the media may portray it differently, only about 35% of proposals are a complete surprise. If you’re a part of this brave group, come in on your own and we’ll create a custom engagement ring design together.

However, you can also include your partner in the process. Sometimes she comes just for the first appointment. Here you can share your story, browse your options, and explore her likes and dislikes for the ring design. Then, return on your own to complete the process and surprise her with the finished product.

Finally, you can design the ring together from start to finish. It’s quite a romantic experience to build something so meaningful together and a great way to ensure she gets the ring design she’s always dreamed of.

3. Prepare for Your Appointment

Before you come in for your first appointment, ask yourself these questions:

  • What is her style and fashion sense?
  • What kind of jewelry does she like or wear daily?
  • What is her metal preference?
  • What is her preferred stone type and shape?
  • Finally, what is your budget for the engagement ring?

Coming prepared will help us tailor the perfect ring for her personality. Talk to her family and friends about what she likes and listen closely to any comments she makes about fashion or style. With a little sleuthing, you may just stumble upon her Pinterest board as well!

4. Create Your Custom Engagement Ring Design

At your first appointment, we’ll start with your ideas and build from there. The first step is choosing the shape, size, cut, and color of the center stone and then the rest of the design will flow from there. With your inspiration and our expertise, we’ll nail down all the details of your ring during this session.

5. Approve the Online Design

After the initial appointment, we use specialized software for computer-aided design (CAD) to build a virtual model of your dream ring.

This is your first chance to see your ideas come to life, and we’ll send it to you so you can explore it from every angle. You’ll also have an open dialogue with our designers so you can request changes before we move on to the next step.

6. Proof of Concept

Next, we’ll use a 3D printer to make an exact replica of your engagement ring in colored resin. Our 3D printing technology removes any element of guesswork from the process because you (and your partner if she’d like) can come by the studio and see exactly what the finished piece will look like. Once you approve it, our in-house designers will source the materials and build your custom ring to your exact specifications.

7. Pick Up Your Finished Ring

This is the most important step in the process and the most exciting! Our designers will contact you when your ring ready for pick-up, walk you through the final details, and, of course, wrap it up in the perfect box for your proposal. Now, you’re officially ready to pop the question with a custom engagement ring.

8. Propose to your partner!

We can’t do this step for you but we can give you some advice. Just like the ring, the best proposal is one that is personalized for your partner.

Our tip? Think about what she really likes and not just what you’ve seen on TV. Going big may be exactly what she wants, but a quiet, intimate moment together can be just as meaningful. If you spend time and care to make the proposal special it’ll create a cherished memory for years to come.
