Step 1: Design consultation
Every piece begins with a conversation. Ian takes time to understand your style, your budget, and the story behind the ring. Bring inspiration images, a Pinterest board, or nothing at all — the consultation is a starting point, not a test. The studio is appointment-only, so the time is yours.
Step 2: Design development and material selection
After the consultation, Ian develops sketches and presents material options. Key decisions at this stage include:
Metal. Yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, and platinum each have distinct properties in terms of durability, appearance, and hypoallergenic qualities. Ian will walk you through which makes sense for your design and lifestyle.
Centre stone. Diamonds remain the most popular choice, available in both natural and lab-grown. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and other coloured gemstones are equally at home in a custom design. If you have a family heirloom stone, Ian can assess it and create a setting to showcase it.
Stone shape. Round brilliant, oval, cushion, marquise, emerald cut, pear, princess — each shape affects the ring's overall proportion and how light moves through the stone.
Setting style. Prong settings maximize light exposure. Bezel settings protect the stone with a metal rim. Halo settings surround the centre stone with smaller accent stones. Channel settings sit stones flush within the band. Ian can explain the structural and aesthetic trade-offs of each.
Step 3: Handcrafting in Calgary
Once the design and materials are confirmed, Ian handcrafts the ring in his East Village studio using CAD-assisted design — a process he adopted in 1989, decades before it became standard practice. Clients are kept informed throughout and have the opportunity to review the piece before final completion.
