Buying an engagement ring is a big decision. And for a lot of people, the perfect ring isn't sitting in a display case somewhere. It needs to be made — just for her, just for this moment.

That's where a custom ring designer comes in. But how do you find the right one in Calgary? And how do you know if they're actually good at what they do?

I've been making custom jewellery in Calgary for over 35 years. In this guide, I'll share exactly what to look for — and what to watch out for.

What Does "Custom" Actually Mean?

A lot of jewellers use the word "custom" — but they don't all mean the same thing.

Some stores let you pick from a catalogue and swap out the stone. Some resize a ring they already made and call it custom. But it isn't.

A truly custom ring starts with nothing. There's no template, no pre-made design. You and the designer build it together from scratch — through conversations, sketches, and design drawings — until it's exactly right.

What to Look for in a Calgary Ring Designer

There are several jewellers in Calgary. But not all of them do true custom work. Here's what matters most.

1. Real training and local experience

Ask where the designer went to school and how long they've worked in Calgary. A designer with decades here knows this city, knows the suppliers, and has a reputation to protect. I graduated from the Alberta College of Art and have been making jewellery in Calgary for over 35 years.

2. A portfolio of original work

Ask to see rings they actually made — not photos from a manufacturer's catalogue. Good custom work looks different every time. If all the rings look the same, they probably didn't start from scratch.

3. A clear process — with no pressure

A good designer walks you through every step: first meeting, design sketches, your approval, then the making. You should never feel rushed. It should feel like a conversation, not a sales pitch.

4. They make it themselves

Some studios design your ring but send it to a factory to be built. That's worth knowing upfront. At Davidson Jewels, I design and make every ring myself — by hand, in my own studio.

5. Honest answers about the stones

A designer you can trust will be upfront about where their diamonds come from. I offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds and will explain the difference plainly so you can decide what feels right.

How the Process Works at Davidson Jewels

Every ring starts with a private meeting — just the two of us. It's free and there's no pressure to commit. We talk about your partner, her style, what matters to her. I ask questions most jewellers never think to ask.

Then I draw up the design. I often start by hand, then move to CAD software — a design tool I've used since 1989. You'll see exactly what your ring will look like before I make it. We adjust until it's right.

Once you approve the design, I make it in my studio at 533 Riverfront Ave SE in Calgary. I work in gold, platinum, and palladium. Most rings are ready in four to eight weeks.

Natural Diamond or Lab-Grown — Which Should You Choose?

This is one of the most common questions I hear right now. The honest answer is: it depends on you.

Natural diamonds formed underground over billions of years. Every one is unique. Lab-grown diamonds are made in a lab in a few weeks. They look identical — same sparkle, same hardness. The main difference is price. Lab-grown diamonds usually cost a lot less for the same size and quality.

Some people love the story behind a natural diamond. Others would rather put that money toward a bigger stone or a more detailed design. Both are valid. I offer both options and won't push you either way.

When you work with me, you're working directly with the person who designs and makes your ring. There's no sales team, no manager, no quota to hit. The whole appointment is about you.
